## What does Gyarufoy show?

Shun Saeki's Malfoid is mid-flight, and the camera is down by her shoes. She rides a broomstick drawn so close that its wood grain fills the right edge of the page, with the bristles sticking out at the bottom left. Black tights and a dark skirt take up the foreground, a heavy robe whips out behind her, and there is a ring on the hand gripping the broom.

Up top is the face. Long pale hair blows loose with one curl falling over her eye, a hoop earring catches the light, and she is grinning with her mouth wide open and her teeth showing, one eye stretched wide. In her raised hand she pinches a glass ball with a metal band around it and smoke curling inside. It looks a lot like Neville's Remembrall, the thing Draco snatches and flies off with during the first-year flying lesson, the scene that ends with Harry on the Quidditch team.

The whole drawing is black and white, screentone and hard ink, like a page lifted out of a weekly manga. There is no speech bubble, no Harry and no blush.

## Why is it called Gyarufoy?

The post is one word: ギャルフォイ, gyaru plus the end of マルフォイ, Malfoy's name in Japanese. Gyaru is the Japanese label for flashy girls with bleached hair, heavy makeup and a don't-care attitude, and Saeki leans on the attitude more than the fashion. Most Malfoid art treats her as a prim rich girl who sneers and then blushes. This one is having a great time being a menace, and she is not going to blush for anyone.

The word caught on. Japanese posts and roundups started using Gyarufoy as a name for this louder version of her, and it is now one of the tags to search on pixiv, next to 女体化マルフォイ. Our [Japanese gallery](/ja/fan-art.md) has it alongside the other Japanese artists.

## Where does it fit in the Malfoid wave?

Japanese X started talking about Malfoid on September 29, a week after @redteneri's [first drawing](/fan-art/redteneri-first-malfoid.md). Then the professionals joined in. bkub, who created Pop Team Epic, posted on October 1, NEZBOX on October 2 and Saeki on October 4. Saeki had the biggest name of the three: he is the artist of Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, the cooking manga Yuto Tsukuda wrote for Weekly Shonen Jump.

It made Japanese news the same day. The blog Hachima Kiko ran it under a headline that ends マジで最高すぎるギャルフォイ, roughly *"a seriously great Gyarufoy"*. As of October 10 the drawing has passed 100,000 likes, a little ahead of NEZBOX's and bkub's. Every artist who has joined in so far is listed on [Malfoid artists](/artists.md).
