   Tumblr user maariaaargh posts a female Draco drawing, fifteen years before the Malfoid origin. It collects a few hundred likes and stays a niche joke.

   @grizz056 posts two drawings, one smug and one flustered. It now has about 96,000 likes, and still nobody has a name for her.

   The word appears

   X user @swag_chaser writes Malfoid in a text-only post, the earliest known use, with no drawing attached.

    avrana releases Draconia, fully voiced in twelve languages. Janggondan, Sachi_Hwa and xin_cere_art post comics and an animation that become some of the most shared pieces.

    A thread on r/AO3 questions the name, and artist Yunayu is reported to have deleted her Bluesky account after harassment.

    Japanese artist naohrw7 tags a quiet portrait with the Japanese name, and sigmman posts the third Patronus comic.

What caused the Malfoid trend?

Three things lined up, and the Malfoid origin makes more sense once you see them together.

First, a template. Redteneri’s drawing, the Malfoid origin point, was easy to copy: one character, one insult, one face. Every artist could add their own pose and line and still be part of the same joke.

Second, a ship with a long history. Fans have paired Harry and Draco for twenty years. A girl Draco turned that old enemies-to-lovers story into something even casual readers got at a glance.

Third, timing. Harry Potter was back in the news with the HBO series in production, so a lot of people who barely remembered Draco were seeing his name again.

Who really started Malfoid?

Ask three people about the Malfoid origin and you can get three names. maariaaargh drew a girl Draco first, in 2011. @swag_chaser typed the word first, in January 2026. @redteneri drew the picture that made people care, in September 2026. A fair telling of the Malfoid origin credits all three and then the hundreds of artists who redrew her in the two weeks after.

How the Malfoid origin spread beyond X

The first week was English-speaking X. By the second week the format had spread in every direction. Comics took over from single drawings, with Sachi_Hwa’s robe-shop story and sigmman’s Patronus series. Animations followed, with xin_cere_art’s POTTTAH loop. Then came the two games, then fan fiction on AO3 and Wattpad, then Reddit threads arguing about the name.

The spread across languages is part of the Malfoid origin too, and it is visible in the posts. matsuryun posted on October 3 with the single caption マルフォイ, and naohrw7 tagged a portrait 女体化マルフォイ on October 7. sigmman, who writes in Korean and English, posted a thank-you drawing for 5,000 followers on October 8. The order is the point: English first, then Korean and Japanese artists within about ten days.

On October 8, about two weeks after the Malfoid origin, new drawings were still going up every day, and the most-liked posts kept gaining likes.
